How to do a button hole using the sewing machine
As you sew more and more it will be essential that you learn how to sew buttons and make buttonholes. There are so many designs of blouses, dresses and jackets that have buttons so it is important that you learn how to use the sewing machine correctly so that the visual finish of the buttonholes is beautiful.
When I was a beginner it used to bother me a lot to spend a lot of time and care to make the garment look nice and then it would get screwed up because the buttonholes didn't match each other or they would get crooked.
Being a task that you do when the garment is already completely finished there is a lot of pressure to get it right hahaha.
In this video I show you how to use the sewing machine to make buttonholes. The video is in Spanish but it is very visual and you can activate the subtitles in your language.
Depending on the type of machine you have, there are two ways to make the buttonholes. The most basic machines make buttonholes in 4 steps. That’s the method I’m going to explain in the video because it’s a more manual method where you have to be actively sewing.
The second method is in one step. You press the buttonhole on the machine and it makes the buttonhole all by itself. This method doesn’t have much to explain because it does it all by itself.

There may be slight variations but this is what a buttonhole presser foot looks like. In the video I show you how to use it. With this presser foot you can adjust the size of your buttonhole depending on the size of button you are going to use.
When I make a garment with buttons I always try the first buttonhole on a scrap to check that the size is correct and that the button goes through easily.
See you soon!
