Talking about taffeta fabric

Looking into different types of fabrics, we can't leave out taffeta! Originally it's a fabric made of silk whose characteristic feature is its thinness, light weight but with a body that keeps its shape well. In order to achieve its characteristic appearance, the odd threads of the warp are crossed by a thread of the weft and the even threads by a different thread of the weft.

The delicacy of the material makes it an exclusive material! Fortunately, today’s technologies
technologies allow great imitations in polyester that bring the finishes closer to a more economical and accessible
to everyone.

The use of taffeta spread throughout Europe and is now very popular in Asian fashion for its effect on draping and moulage-style pattern pieces. As we mentioned, the fact that it is a thin, lightweight fabric allows us to create large volumes that hold themselves in the garment.

The PatternCos team uses this type of fabric repeatedly. As you can see in some of the garments we have made, the drapes made with this type of fabric create interesting hard textures, but they are not too heavy.

The seams are fine and the deep pleats bring light and a very elegant finish!
But taffeta fabric is not only at the service of draping and external volumes to the body,it is also very easy to weave to achieve anatomical finishes.

It adapts very easily to shapes, so working it with bustier, corset or cocktail bodice patterns are a great option to reveal the elegance of the fabric.

Sewing Curiosities
Taffeta is a rather delicate fabric, especially when it is made of silk. Care must be taken with the pins as the surface can be marked. It would be advisable to place the pins in the seam allowance section. The same applies if you prefer to baste the garment in place.
You can drape a large amount of fabric in a small amount of space because it is very thin and light.
Take advantage of it to create ruffles that stay in the air with little effort. Taffeta is a lightweight fabric but with a sculptural body.
You may not know it but there are fabrics with a soft, flowing feel with chiffons, organza or satins. Taffeta however has a rougher feel and the pleats are hard and sharp, perfect for creating very textured effects with little effort.
Taffeta has a very elegant look so delicate hand finishing is advised rather than industrial stitching and finishing.
The light weight of taffeta plays in favor of sculptural volumes but it is necessary to use interlining to create body-fitting shapes.
